SCA Student Membership
The SCA can trace its origins to student activism and has long served student needs by providing a forum for professional papers and publications, meetings to communicate ideas, discoveries, and new research, a venue to seek and find job opportunities, and a place to meet and get to know your peers.

Student members receive all the benefits of regular members except the annual Proceedings. In order to encourage and support student participation, the SCA requires a fee of just $30.00 for student membership, less than one-half the regular member rate. All members joining at the student rate must provide a copy of a current student ID card with the membership form.

Go to the membership page to learn more about the benefit of being a member or download the membership application (in PDF or Word format) and mail it with your payment, or FAX the form with credit card payment information to the SCA Business Office, Fax # (530) 342-3641.
History of Student Involvement in SCA
The SCA, its current leadership, and its "old-timers" started the organization as a "Young Turks" insurgency in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the effort was very much a part of the movements promoting training in New Archaeology and Salvage Archaeology (CRM) on college campuses. Historically, the SCA and its student representatives were heavily involved in local and statewide grassroots politics that ultimately brought about the CRM system we know today. In addition, the SCA and its student representatives have a long history of being instrumental in bringing about a change in the culture of archaeology, and such common dimensions of the scientific enterprise in California today as women's power and central leadership role and the essential partnerships we practice with descendent communities in archaeological undertakings can be traced to SCA student action.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, students had an increasingly diminished role in the organization as the insurgency aged, took on career positions, had families, and set down the banners. However, this is starting to change, and student membership, which reached an historic low of just 7 percent in 1998, has grown rapidly and now rests at 23 percent (n=253), not just a significant voting block but a group ready and willing to steer the organization and the practice of archaeology in the state of California.

Student Affairs Committee
The SCA Student Affairs Committee was established in 2005 and is open to all undergraduate and graduate students interested in California archaeology. The primary goal of Committee is to promote student involvement in SCA meetings and events. Additionally, the Committee is dedicated to voicing the concerns and issues of student members, who represent approximately a quarter of the SCA membership.

Campus Representative Network
Campus Representatives serve as liaisons between the SCA student affairs committee and students of a particular academic institution. The primary responsibilities of campus representatives are to:
  • Disseminate information (via email, flyers, word of mouth) about SCA student affairs and events to the students of a particular institution.
  • Bring pertinent issues, concerns, and ideas of students of a particular institution to the attention of the committee.
  • Post items of interest to students of California archaeology from the Reps’ home campus on the SCA Student Group listserv.
To find your Campus Rep, click here.

No Rep listed for your campus? Becoming a SCA Student Affairs Campus Representative is a great way to get involved in the California archaeological community and to contribute to student participation and input in the SCAs! For more information about the program, including information about how to become a Campus Rep, click here.

SCA Student Listserv
In addition to the Campus Representative network, students can stay informed about the latest events, field opportunities, and SCA happenings by joining the SCA Student Listserv. For more information about the listserv, click here. To join, contact stushingham@ucdavis.edu. You will receive an invitation to the group within one week.

SCA Annual Meeting
Each spring, the SCA holds a 3-4 day annual meeting. Even if you don't present a paper or a poster (which many students do), attending an Annual Meeting is a great way to hear about the latest discoveries in California archaeology, meet professors, make job contacts, and socialize with a dynamic group of people interested in California archaeology. Optional social events include a Wine and Beer Tasting Silent Auction and the SCA Awards Banquet.

Students (and all members) are welcomed and urged to attend the SCA's Open Business Meeting held during the Annual Meeting. The Business Meeting provides an opportunity for members to learn more about the organization and to have their voices heard when the floor is open to comment. The SCA Awards Banquet, which traditionally takes place on Saturday night during the Annual Meeting, consists of an awards supper followed by a presentation by a keynote speaker. Even if you don't attend the Banquet (for which there is a charge), the doors open around 8 pm for all to enjoy the keynote speaker’s address for free. There will also be a live band afterwards!

Data Sharing Meetings
Each fall, the SCA sponsors Northern Data Sharing and Southern Data Sharing meetings. Thinking about presenting your first paper or poster? The Data Sharing Meetings are ideal venues, as the meetings are typically one-day events and are much smaller and informal than the Annual Meeting.

SCA Student Awards
The SCA annually holds student competitions for the James A. Bennyhoff Memorial Fund Award and the SCA Annual Meeting Student Paper Competition.
