Basketry and Other Woven Materials: A California Art Form.
California Indian basketry is renowned for its diversity, craftsmanship, and magnificence. The San Diego Archaeological Center (SDAC) and Kumeyaay Ipai Interpretive Center (KIIC) is proud to present Diania Caudell (Luiseno) member of California Indian Basket weavers Association (CIBA) to teach a two class series on basket weaving. 25th Annual Meeting of the California Indian Conference
For the last quarter century the exchange of knowledge and perspectives has been the hallmark of the CIC, which was inaugurated at UC Berkeley in 1985. The CIC is committed to the the recovery and advancement of California Indians and the promotion of excellence in collaborative cutting-edge scholarship in linguistics, archaeology, anthropology, and history. Much has changed for the better in the last quarter century in tribal politics, law, economics, scholarship, technology, and the preservation, retrieval and renewal of California Indian peoples' culture. Tribal leaders, elders and youth, culture bearers, museum administrators, California Parks personnel, artists, environmentalists, educators from elementary grades to institutions of higher learning, independent scholars, archaeologists and others engaged in cultural resource management: all are encouraged to attend this landmark conference.

The 2010 Great Basin Anthropological Conference will be held October 20-23, 2010 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton, Utah. The conference center is close to hotels, pubs, and restaurants. Register early for special discounted rates.

CCPH Annual Conference, Sonora
The California Council for the Promotion of History's annual conference will convene in the Sierra foothill Gold Rush towns of Sonora, Jamestown and Columbia, October 21-23. This year's theme is 'What's So Funny About History?" Funny means comical and clownish, but it also means humorous, witty, surprising, eccentric, satiric, ironic, farcical, absurd, quirky and, in Shakespeare's phrase, wondrous strange. In these broader senses, much of California history has been very funny. Funny has greased political and economic wheels, disarmed and emboldened, spoken truth to power, and earned this state a reputation for creative spontaneity and a high tolerance for odd-balls. In all of this, funny has been a powerful agent of historical change.

Ceramics Rediscovered: Science Reshapes Understanding of Hispanic Life in Early California.
Discover how ceramics were made, used and traded in early California with the newest exhibit at El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park. Based on a decade-long investigation of ceramic production using archaeological evidence and scientific analysis, the exhibit offers a rare glimpse into daily life during California's Spanish and Mexican periods (1769-1848). Featuring period artifacts and reproduction pottery, this groundbreaking exhibit traces the evolution of California's earliest potters and the material culture they helped shape.
