The Riverside Convention Center

2010 Plenary Session
"Forging New Frontiers: The Curation Crisis, Stewardship, and Cultural Heritage Management in California Archaeology"
The Plenary Session for 2010 will focus on current and ongoing curation concerns in California cultural heritage management, and seeks to continue the dialogue on these important issues. The Call for Papers also encourages symposia, sessions, papers, and posters on collections, conservation, and cultural heritage concerns and Native American participation on these topics. Other related topics can include museums, museum exhibitions, and collections topics as they relate to California archaeology.

The Program
The upcoming 2010 Society for California Archaeology Annual Meeting in Riverside promises to be another great event. The charming Mission Inn, one of California's oldest hotels, built in 1876, provides the backdrop for conference activities, in addition to the adjoining spacious Riverside Convention Center located in the heart of the Historic Downtown District. This year's conference is jam-packed full of an exciting line-up of papers, posters, symposia, and sessions. The general theme of the Plenary will focus on the current curation crisis in California archaeology. Hold on! All is not doom and gloom as our panel of illustrious speakers will discuss their collective experiences and ideas for creative collaborative projects and potential solutions for this important issue. Keynote Speaker
Dr. Sven Haakanson, Jr.
Executive Director, Alutiiq Museum
Kodiak, Alaska

Sven Haakanson is the driving force behind the revitalization of indigenous language, culture, and customs in an isolated region of North America. A native Alutiiq trained with a Ph.D. in anthropology, he is straddling worlds in an effort to preserve and give contemporary meaning to Native history and local legends, rituals, and customs. The Alutiiq Museum, which he directs, is an archaeological archive and anthropological repository of cultural artifacts of the Kodiak archipelago. Under Haakanson’s leadership, the museum also serves as a traveling resource, bringing innovative exhibitions, educational programming, and field research to the landlocked villages throughout the island of Kodiak by boat and small plane. The museum provides Haakanson with a unique opportunity to establish and cultivate collaborative relationships with museums throughout the world whose holdings include ancient Alutiiq artifacts.

Curation Workshop
First Aid for California Finds: An Introduction, led by Alice Boccia Paterakis and Jacqueline Zak. Paterakis, Director of Conservation at the Kaman-Kalehoyuk Excavation of the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology, and Zak, consultant for the National Park Service/Topanga Anthropological Consultants, bring years of experience and overall enthusiasm to this workshop, which will feature guidelines for a non-invasive approach to the preservation of objects typically encountered during excavation at historic and prehistoric sites in California. After a brief overview of the causes of deterioration, discussion will address strategies for the safe recovery, transport, and storage of stone, bone, shell, metals, glass, wood, fibers, and other materials. Seats are Limited – Register Early!

From desert to shining sea, recent submissions promise a great round of papers on recent research in California archaeology. The ever-popular “Two Minutes/Two Slides” will be back again, featuring presentations at a breath-taking pace for all of you who missed it last year, and for those of you who will be back again for more.

Silent Auction
The Silent Auction will be held in the splendid surroundings of the Mission Inn, centering on the outdoor Saint Francis Atrio and rooms surrounding the atrio. Enjoy the hospitality of your colleagues at the wine and beer tasting, bid on items at the auction (support the Society!), and have a chance to catch up with your friends. The organizers and the Mission Inn are excited about having our event here, so please register early to ensure a ticket!

Annual Meeting Underwriters
Rich Olson is leading up our team to encourage the fine businesses and corporations engaged in archaeological work in our state to demonstrate their appreciation of the efforts of the Society by making generous (tax deductible!) donations. These contributions will enable our Society to continue its good works in both the public and private sector, in education and advocacy, representing professional archaeologists throughout California. For further information, please email Rich. Donations should be sent to:
